Health coverage is the hardest consumer product in America to shop for. Premiums, deductibles, networks, formularies and out-of-pocket maximums all move independently, and the cheapest premium is very often the most expensive plan overall. We split health insurance into the two paths that actually behave differently — Medicare for 65+, and individual or family coverage for everyone under 65.

What Health Insurance comparison gets you

Two distinct paths, done right

Medicare and under-65 coverage follow completely different rules. We do not blur them together.

Licensed agents, not call-center scripts

You speak with agents licensed in your state who can explain a plan's network before you enroll.

Check your doctors and drugs first

The best plan on paper is the wrong plan if your physician is out of network or your prescription is off the formulary.

No cost to compare

Plan pricing is set by the carrier and by law. Using an agent never raises your premium.

Questions & Answers

Health Insurance questions, answered

Should I use the Medicare path or the under-65 path?

If you are 65 or older, or under 65 and qualify for Medicare through disability, ESRD or ALS, use the Medicare path. Everyone else — including early retirees, self-employed people, contractors and families without employer coverage — should use the under-65 path.

Does using an agent cost more than enrolling myself?

No. Health and Medicare plan premiums are filed with and approved by regulators. The price is identical whether you enroll directly, through Healthcare.gov, or through a licensed agent. Agents are compensated by the carrier, not by you.

What is an out-of-pocket maximum?

It is the most you will pay in a plan year for covered in-network services. Once you hit it, the plan pays 100 percent of covered in-network care for the rest of the year. It is arguably the single most important number on a plan — it defines your worst-case financial exposure.

Can I switch plans at any time?

Generally no. Under-65 marketplace plans have an annual Open Enrollment Period, with Special Enrollment Periods triggered by qualifying life events such as losing coverage, marriage, birth or a permanent move. Medicare has its own Annual Enrollment Period and separate Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment. The specific dates and rules differ by path.
